Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner

Choosing the right firewood can reduce creosote buildup in your chimney.

The Importance of Dry Wood

Burning dry, seasoned wood is crucial for minimizing creosote buildup in your chimney. Wet or green wood burns inefficiently, producing more smoke and creosote, which can lead to dangerous chimney fires.

Seasoned firewood has been dried for at least six months, ideally stacked off the ground and covered to protect it from moisture. The lower moisture content in seasoned wood results in a cleaner, hotter burn.

Choosing Hardwoods Over Softwoods

Hardwoods like oak, maple, and birch burn longer and hotter than softwoods, resulting in less creosote. They have a higher density, providing more energy per log.

Softwoods, such as pine, can produce more creosote due to their higher resin content. If you primarily burn hardwoods, you will need to clean your chimney less frequently, reducing maintenance issues.

Storing Firewood Properly

Proper storage of firewood ensures it stays dry and ready to burn. Stack firewood off the ground on a pallet or similar structure to allow air circulation around the stack.

Cover the top of the stack to protect it from rain and snow, but leave the sides open for air flow. This will help the wood to dry further, ensuring it burns cleanly and efficiently.
